The memorable words of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr., are parts of two compelling and iconic speeches of the 19 and 20th centuries. The power of speech has started and ended wars, helped leaders rise and fall, and provided comfort in times of crisis. Great speeches in history have one common element—persuasion.

For this week’s Assignment, you review and examine the use of persuasion in speech by applying the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and explain how Ethos, Pathos, and Logos function in speech making.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review the Learning Resources for this week.  Focus, in particular, on Ethos, Pathos, and Logos as well as the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM).
  • Search for and review speeches on the Internet. The speech can be a political speech, keynote speech, commencement address, and/or a response to a crisis.
  • Choose one speech. Think about how Ethos, Pathos, and Logos function in the speech to persuade the audience.
  • Consider how the ELM cognitive model might be helpful in analyzing the different ways persuasion is communicated in your selected speech.

The Assignment:

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper addressing the following:

  • Provide a 1- to 2-sentence description of the speech along with a citation and link to the transcript or video of your chosen speech.
  • Explain how Ethos, Pathos, and Logos function in your chosen speech.
  • Apply the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and explain which processing route persuasion follows and why.
