The readings this week are on the concept of face. For Americans,

face usually means one’s own standing in society and in one’s own estimation. One is responsible for maintaining, obtaining, and standing up for one’s face. In more collectivistic cultures, everyone’s face is more or less everyone’s responsibility. To threaten someone else’s face is inappropriate and may lead to more of a reduction of one’s own and not the other’s face. What about communcation as it relates to conflict and employeee relations in organizations? What do you think? Should there more of a focus on the face needs of everyone in the organization? Would organizations be more effective and productive? Would there be too great of a focus on “relations” and self-esteem? Perhaps the concept of face is just silly in American organizations where getting the job done should be more important than everyone thinking well of themselves. If you can’t stand a little bit of truth and rugged competition, maybe you need to work in a “touchy feely” place. Start with your claim on face. Explain it and support it with references to the readings, the lecture, and some outside source.
